Over 150 dancers and musicians gathered at Skipton on Saturday 17 July to enjoy Clogfest – the annual celebration of English step-dance.

They came from Surrey, London, Oxford, Carlisle, and Durham, as well as from our local counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Clogfest is now established as an annual party where friends meet to show off their new dances and tunes in the beautiful setting of the Leeds-Liverpool canal basin in Skipton town centre. The backdrop of brightly-painted boats is enhanced by the dancers’ colourful costumes, which range from traditional Victorian shawls to smart modern skirts.

Around 500 people turned up to watch the free showcase on Saturday afternoon, where each team performed their party piece on a stage. To everyone’s delight, a special guest turned up – Wallop, the clog-dancing horse from the Forest of Bowland, performed his four-legged waltz.

Despite the rain, it was a happy occasion, as everyone swapped news and gossip. Master of Ceremonies, Martyn Harvey, reminded the audience that clog dancing was difficult to learn, and hard to perform on a stage in front of other dancers who watch every move intently. But this is not a competition; it’s a celebration of the rich variety of regional dancing styles.

Paul Hudson, organiser, said “We’re delighted so many dancers and musicians come to Skipton year after year. They always enjoy themselves and put on a good show. And we’re grateful to our sponsors, who help us with the cost of the festival – Craven District Council, Copper Dragon Brewery, Skipton Castle, and Trefor Owen Clogs. Their community spirit is much appreciated. We’re all looking forward to the BIG 10th Clogfest next year on 8 – 10 July 2011.”

Programme details are on the web at www.clogfest.org/

New Improved Shop

The Copper Dragon shop has just got even better now offering a much wider choice of bottled ales and ciders, branded giftware, chocolates and snacks.

The shop has always been a popular stopping point for visitors looking to buy our beers at the source.

The new product range includes Orchard Pig ciders and cordials; Whittakers Chocolates, Yorkshire crisps and a significantly increased range of new Copper Dragon clothing and glassware all at competitive prices.

So if you're struggling to buy the ideal gift for the beer lover in your life, then pay us a visit soon!

New Bottle Labels

The new Copper Dragon bottle label

At Copper Dragon we don't do things by half and this extends to the brewery chickens.

On checking the chicken's hutch this morning, Sales Director (and part time chicken keeper) Ruth Bennett was staggered to discover one of the biggest hens eggs we have ever seen.

Double in size to what you would consider normal, the egg she believes, can only have been laid by resident super-fowl ‘Saphire’ the Black Rock. Unavailable for comment on the matter, Saphire has clearly been spurred on by England's recent change of form in the World Cup.

During a recent visit to the Isle of Man TT races, Steve Taylor & Ruth Bennett spent a few hours after the races at the island's cat sanctuary.

This is a voluntary charity run by a delightful lady called Sue, who started the sanctuary in her own home with just one or two abandoned, unwanted and poorly treated cats, she now cares for over 200!! Her converted and extended garage is a peaceful and safe haven for the gentle and trusting creatures. They can spend their days resting in the enclosed shelter or strolling around the surrounding gardens and fields.

The charity receives no government support and totally relies on peoples generosity and compassion with donations of food or revenue. The cats that make their way to the sanctuary are all referred on to the vets for vaccination and spaying or neutering. This all obviously is expensive and any donations are gratefully accepted and put towards the costs.

Cats can be adopted on line and sponsored for the small figure of £3.00 per month. Regular updates on your cat are given and of course you are welcome to visit if on the island.

Cats can be given a new home in your home but it must stressed that many of these poor creatures have already gone through traumatic and dreadful times and their new home must be suited to their individual and special needs.

Please visit their web site for further details and how to sponsor a cat.

The experience was one that Steve & Ruth repeated twice during their trip and as it was not possible to bring home a cat they left a donation and bought a gift or two from the small gift shop
